What is FHIR?

FHIR

The Fast Healthcare Interoperability Resources standard defines how healthcare information can be exchanged between different computer systems regardless of how it is stored in those systems. FHIR is based on internet standards widely used by industries outside of healthcare.

FHIR R4 contains the first normative content for the interoperability standard, creating a firm foundation for the healthcare IT industry. R4 is the culmination of 18 months of extensive work to finalize the base parts of the specification and incorporate changes and enhancement requests received from implementation partners across the world. FHIR Release 4 marks a significant milestone with the introduction of a normative base. This new maturity will help support our very active and growing community. Many major healthcare systems in United States have already adopted FHIR in their health IT practices.

Since FHIR was originally launched, it has been used by healthcare application implementers across the globe, including the payer community, drawn by its ease of use. This has led to a large online community. The Continuity of Care (CCD) profile represents a core data set of the most relevant administrative, demographic, and clinical information facts about a patient’s healthcare, covering one or more healthcare encounters.
